Pampa police say three kidnapped children were not rescued from a stopped semi Friday afternoon in Pampa, contrary to a post in a Gray County community group.
Around 5:40 p.m. on Friday, police said a caller reported the sound of a "child crying or screaming" coming from a red semi driving along Hobart in Pampa.
Later, police said someone made a Facebook post in a local community group describing a scene where three crying children were rescued from the semi.
The poster said one of the allegedly kidnapped children was "one missing from Amarillo."
Pampa police say the description of the scene, including the rescued children, was entirely false.
The department in fact said that neither its officers, the Gray County Sheriff's Office nor the Texas Department of Public Safety were involved in any traffic stop matching that description.
Police said that, although someone did call and make the initial report, officers never found or stopped a truck matching its description.
In their post, police said they knew the post and alleged information could cause some Pampa citizens to be "unsettled."
"We normally don’t respond to posts, but this time we want to let the citizens of Pampa know this information is false," read the post. "Please be careful not to take to heart social media posts before confirming the facts. Had a situation like this occurred, we would have certainly put a press release out. "
