VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – For more than three decades the Indiana Military Museum has educated the public on our country’s military history.
“I was a collector since age seven and the collection got so big that people keep saying -hey why don’t you put this stuff in a museum so everybody can see it,” said the museum’s curator Jim Osborne.
The museum houses everything from Civil War items to military uniforms to many other artifacts. It is very popular. Osborne says people from all 50 states and 65 countries have visited.
There are two buildings. The main building holds several display cases. In the second building you will find a recreated war trench, displays of what a home in the United States looked like during World War II and a simulated military office.
Outside you can wonder around the aircraft, see part of the famed Navy warship the USS Indianapolis and view military equipment used throughout the years.
According to Osborne, all os these items serve one purpose and that’s to teach and to especially teach children.
“We want them to understand what the men and women of our armed services have done for us to preserve our freedoms throughout our history,” added Osborne.
The Indiana Military Museum is located at 715 S. 6th Street in Vincennes. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
