The US Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade has led to strong reaction in Mobile and Baldwin County as folks on both sides of the aisle spoke out on the controversial ruling.
The issue sparked a protest in Fairhope on Friday as pro-choice advocates rallied for women's reproductive rights.
Signs in hand, and chanting in unison, dozens of women, men, and children gathered to protest the SCOTUS ruling.
Leigh Bancroft helped organize the rally through social media.
"We were expecting it to happen, but it's still shocking. It's still sickening. It's still very scary," said Bancroft.
The crowd of protesters got supportive honks from folks who passed by.
"This is about women's reproductive rights. Women have many different reasons they seek abortions," Bancroft said, "Some women have miscarriages and now they'll have to carry their baby to term. And to have to carry your rapist's baby to term is just cruel."
Others at the rally agreed, including families who said there are often misconceptions about their message.
"My husband and I had fertility issues. Of course, I'm not for abortion, but I'm for women's rights. I support my neighbor having a choice for her body. It shouldn't be my decision to make," added protester Ali Spomer.
Bancroft said the SCOTUS decision sets a dangerous precedent.
"Women's lives are endangered by this. Families are affected by this. Men are affected by this. And this is a slippery slope. I mean, what is next?" said Bancroft.
However, pro-life advocates in our area believe abortion is an issue for the states, and they argue there are better options, like services for women.
"I also think this is an exciting opportunity for the church to step up and show care for women," said pro-life supporter Mary Freeman.
"I'm excited that we're going to value life even in the womb," Amy Kendall, a pro-life advocate, added.
Local pro-choice advocates say their fight isn't done; they aren't ruling out more rallies in Baldwin County in the near future.
