‘Woke’ Canceled By Hulu After 2 Seasons

Woke has been canceled by Hulu after just 2 seasons.

The comedy series, which originally premiered on the streaming platform in September 2020, aired its second season on the streaming platform in April. Each of its seasons consisted of eight episodes, both produced by Sony Pictures Television and ABC Signature.

Inspired by the life of artist Keith Knight, who helped to develop the show and executive produce, Woke starred Lamorne Morris as the central character Keef. Keef is a Black cartoonist who is on the verge of mainstream success when a tragic incident brings the world around him to life (literally).

The series utilized a unique combination of live-action shots with animated sequences as Keef sees and hears inanimate objects talking to him and making him more aware of racism in his everyday life. T. Murph, Blake Anderson, Sasheer Zamata and Rose McIver also starred in the show.

Knight developed the show with Marshall Todd, who also served as executive producer alongside Maurice “Mo” Marable, Aeysha Carr, Richie Schwartz, John Will, Will Gluck, and Eric Christian Olsen. Jay Dyer served as showrunner and executive producer on Season 1 before Anthony King took over for Season 2. Kate Schumaecker served as executive producer on the pilot.

The series struggled to complete the second season after production was forced to shut down three times due to COVID cases on the set, including some in Zone A where the main actors were present.

There are currently no other details as to why Hulu decided to cancel the show at this point in time.
