Happenings around the lakes area, June 26-July 6

The Detroit Lakes Tribune accepts community calendar items for publication online and, space permitting, in our Wednesday and Sunday print editions. Submissions must be made at least a week in advance of the event date, in writing, to either dltribune@dlnewspapers.com or vgerdes@dlnewspapers.com. Organ Dedication and Recital: Eksjo Lutheran Church, 11516 U.S. Highway 10, Lake Park, will host a dedication ceremony for its Reuter-Moe organ, as well as a demonstration recital for the new instrument, presented by Pastor Roy Noel, Dillon J. Swanson and the Allen Moe Pipe Organ Company., starting at 6:30 p.m. No admission fee, but a free will offering for the Red River Theatre Organ Society will be taken. Open to the public.

Detroit Lakes Class of 1972 Reunion: Detroit Lakes High School Class of 1972 will host a reunion at Shorewood Pub, 5 to 10 p.m. Contact Debbie Disse at 218-849-6747 for more information.

The Great Race: The Detroit Lakes Breakfast Rotary Club is hosting an overnight visit by participants in The Great Race at Peoples Park (behind Zorbaz). This race of antique cars traveling from Warwick, Rhode Island to Fargo, North Dakota will arrive in Detroit Lakes around 4 p.m. There will be food trucks, a beer garden, and a display by local car clubs at Peoples Park from noon to 2:30 p.m., followed by the arrival of the racers, whose cars will be at the park until 7:30 p.m. Roughly 130 racers are expected, with the possibility of thousands of spectators.

Wildlife Movie: A free screening of the family-friendly, wildlife-themed movie, "The Mighty Weasel," will be held at 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. Rigged with over 50 cameras, an English garden gives rare insight into the dramatic life of a mother weasel as she tries to raise her first family. The movie is approximately 50 minutes long; all are welcome.

Anime and Manga Club: Anime and manga fans are invited to geek out over their favorite shows and stories, starting at 4 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes Public Library. A different theme is discussed at each monthly meet-up, and snacks are always available.

Frazee Community Blood Drive: AMVETS Post 612 of Frazee is hosting a community blood drive from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Frazee Event Center. Pint Size Polka: Local libraries are inviting audiences of all ages to go under the sea with accordion player Mike Schneider in an ocean-themed polka-palooza! Pint Size Polka performances will be held at the Detroit Lakes Public Library at 10:30 a.m. and at the Cormorant Community Center, 10929 Co. Hwy 5, Pelican Rapids, at 1 p.m. The program is geared toward children ages 6-11 and will last approximately 45 minutes. Admission is free thanks to funding from the Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.

Teen Book vs. Movie Club: Area teens are invited to join a Book vs. Movie Club at 4 p.m. in the main meeting room of the Detroit Lakes Public Library, 1000 Washington Ave., for this month's Book Vs. Movie debate on "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card, in all of its many adaptations — book, graphic novel, TV shows, and movies. Visit larl.org or call 218-847-2168 for more information.

Tuesdays in the Park: Jan Severson performs live as part of Detroit Lakes' Tuesdays in the Park summer concert series at 7 p.m. under the City Park Bandshell. Picnic hosted by Fuller Center for Housing starts at 5:30 p.m. Seating is limited, so bring your own blankets or chairs. Admission is a free will donation; all proceeds from the picnic benefit Fuller Center's local housing projects, while donations for the concert go to support the artists.

Trucks & Tunes: The Detroit Lakes Noon Rotary Club is sponsoring an evening of food, fun and live music at the Detroit Lakes City Park, starting at 5 p.m. A variety of food trucks will be gathered in the parking lot until 8 p.m., serving up a host of summer favorites, while over at the bandshell, Chris Koza will be performing. Admission is free, though the cost of food may vary from truck to truck.

Food Truck Fridays: Hosted by Detroit Lakes Noon Rotary, Food Truck Fridays will take place every Friday through Sept. 2. Detroit Lakes City Park, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Food trucks on site may change; event will be held rain or shine.

Music on the Mountain: Country superstar Jake Owen headlines the 7th Annual Music on the Mountain fundraiser at Detroit Mountain Recreation Area, with special guests John Morgan and George Birge. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., with the music getting underway at 6:15. Regional food trucks will be available throughout the night. All concert attendees must have a ticket. Music on the Mountain is an all ages event; however, children should be accompanied by a responsible adult. Show will go on rain or shine, so please plan accordingly. This is an outdoor event and the lodge will not be open to the general public. General admission lawn seating only; chairs will not be provided so please bring your own. On-site parking limited; free shuttles will be running back and forth from M State to the Mountain, 5 p.m.-12 a.m. Tickets available at detroitmountain.com .

Knights of Columbus Breakfast: The local Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring a pancake/French toast and sausage breakfast from 8 am. to 12:30 p.m. in the Holy Rosary Parish Center, 1043 Lake Ave., Detroit Lakes. All are welcome.

Sallie/Melissa Boat Parades: The Lake Melissa/Sallie Associations' Independence Day Boat Parades are scheduled to begin concurrently, at 10:30 a.m. sharp. Boats should meet at the Shoreham "channel" inlet/outlet, then proceed clockwise around the two lakes. About 60 decorated watercraft of all kinds will, be participating. Traveling trophies will be awarded to boats, properties and people for decorations in various categories. Fireworks on the Fourth: The Detroit Lakes Chamber of Commerce and area businesses are once again teaming up to present a spectacular Independence Day fireworks show, starting at dusk on Little Detroit Lake. Viewing is best from the City Beach, though there are a variety of spots from which to view the free show.

Wild Wednesdays: Every Wednesday, June 8-Aug. 31, Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge will be offering two sessions of "Wild Wednesdays," at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Explore the world of Nature with your child during this hour-long adventure for 3-7 year-olds. Listen to a story, go for a hike, make a craft. There's a different topic every week! Space is limited, so pre-registration required for these free programs. Lakes Area Farmers Market: The Lakes Area Farmers Market will be open every Tuesday and Saturday this summer from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Detroit Lakes' Peoples Park. All are welcome.
