Crowds celebrate togetherness at Out! Raleigh Pride despite Supreme Court decision

This weekend, there was a celebration of the LGBTQ community in downtown Raleigh.

Trey Roberts said it's a great feeling to see all the people and all the colors in downtown Raleigh.

“We need a place to gather and celebrate,” said Roberts.

Because a festival like Out! Raleigh Pride was not always possible.

“So many years ago, we had to hide,” said Roberts.

There appears to be no hiding Saturday – the tenth year for this event.

But even after all the years, those in the LGBTQ community feel the fight for their rights continues.

Particularly the opinion written by conservative Justice Clarence Thomas, who said other landmark decisions should also be re-visited.

“Contraception, he wants to look at same-sex partners and he wants to look at same-sex marriage,” said Johnson.

Johnson is an army veteran, she knows how to fight back.

She said the LGBTQ community has also proven it knows how to fight back. Johnson said their weapon is their ballot.

“We just have to stay united, stay strong and vote," said Johnson. "And vote the folks in who are going to protect our rights.”

But, at this moment at least, it's about celebrating being together.
