KC Chiefs: Brett Veach’s biggest free agent misses

Brett Veach as GM of the Kansas City Chiefs has made some great value signings but what are some of his biggest misses when it comes to free agent signings?

Brett Veach has made a lot of both great and bold moves as general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs, especially when it comes to free agency. To go along with the biggest hits, he does have some misses that the Chiefs will likely want back.

Here are the three biggest misses that Brett Veach has had in free agency as Chiefs GM.

1. Jarran Reed

Many thought that signing Jarran Reed was one of Brett Veach’s best moves of the 2021 offseason. As it turns out, it was one of the most disappointing moves of that offseason.

In a recent article, I gave the Jarran Reed signing a solid D. I feel that is a fair grade for how he performed with the team. To many fans, Reed was a ghost for most of the season, especially the first half of the regular season. He had 3.5 sacks in 2021, compared to 8.5 in 2020 with the Seattle Seahawks, in three fewer games in 2020 as well. His PFF overall defensive grade ($) for the whole 2021 season was a below-average 54.5 but he did have a great 85.1 overall grade in the postseason. He also forced a fumble that led to a defensive touchdown in Week 14 against the Raiders.

Reed was expected to be the Robin to Chris Jones’ Batman but he didn’t turn out even close to being that for the Chiefs. Given the hype that surrounded him leading up to the season, I believe that it is fair to say that he was never a great fit for the Chiefs and is a signing that Brett Veach will want to forget.
