INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION

The City of Ponca City’s free fireworks display at Lake Ponca will be held on Monday, July 4 at 9:50 p.m. The colorful pyrotechnic and musically choreographed fireworks show will fill the night skies over beautiful Lake Ponca to celebrate America’s Independence Day. The fireworks will be choreographed to music and can be heard by turning to local radio station KPNC-FM 100.7 or KLOR 99.3 FM. A safety zone will be buoyed off on Lake Ponca beginning at approximately 7:00 pm on July 4. If you are in a watercraft on Lake Ponca after 7:00 pm, please stay out of the buoyed off area until the fireworks and the buoys have been removed.

Please remember: Private fireworks are not allowed on or around the Lake Ponca Recreation Area or any of the roadways or water areas around Lake Ponca. Contact: Eric Newell, Parks and Recreation Director, at 767-0430

PARKS AND RECREATION NEWS AMBUC POOL AND WENTZ POOL HOURS OF OPERATION:

AMBUC Pool

Open Swim is held from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday thru Tuesday and Thursday thru Saturday. The pool is closed on Wednesdays for maintenance.

Open Swim Admission: $2.00 for ages 13 and up and $1.00 for age 12 and under.

All children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Senior/Adult Lap Swim is held from 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Senior/Adult Lap Swim Admission is $1.00 for adults. Wentz Pool

Open Swim is held from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday and Tuesday thru Saturday. The pool is closed on Mondays for maintenance.

Admission: $2.00 for ages 13 and up and $1.00 for ages 12 and under.

All children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Individuals may purchase pool passes for AMBUC Pool and Wentz Pool from the Ponca City RecPlex. Pool Passes are 25 swims for $20.00.

Active RecPlex memberships allows access to both Wentz and AMBUC Pool.

KIDS NIGHT OUT

• The RecPlex will offer a night out for kids without parents! Kids will get to play organized games, use the climbing wall, watch a movie, eat snacks and have loads of fun! All kids will be super vised by RecPlex staff.

• Saturday, June 18, 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with check-in starting at 5:00 p.m.

• For ages 2 to 12 years. The cost is $35.00. Sibling discount $25.00.

ADULT TENNIS LESSONS

• Coach Lynne Collenback will be holding small group adult tennis lessons. The once weekly session will help anyone, no matter their skill level.

• These 2 hour classes are on Tuesdays, June 14, 21, 28 and July 12, 19, 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wally Smith Tennis Center, 706 N. 7th Street.

• For ages 18 and older, the cost is $15.00 per class.

YOUTH TENNIS CAMP

• These 4-day summer camps are during the month of July for ages 5-17. Each session will put campers through a series of drills and competitions to help improve their fundamental skills. Registrants can sign up for multiple session for additional training. Registrants will receive a free t-shirt.

• The camps are Monday thru Thursday at the Wally Smith Tennis Center.

• For ages 5 thru 17. The cost is $40.00 per participant for each camp.

GLASS FUSING FOR ADULTS

• In collaboration with the Doodle Academy, the Rec-Plex is pleased to offer Glass Fusing classes for adults.

• The class dates are on June 16 (register thru June 13) or July 14 (register thru July 11), from 2:00-4:00 p.m., at the Doodle Academy, 103 E. Grand Ave.

• For ages 16 and older, the cost is $35.00 for the June 16 class and $40.00 for the July 14 class.

KAYAK LESSONS

• Do you want to learn the fundamentals of kayaking? These beginner lessons will teach you important safety practices, identify the different types of equipment, the basic strokes and techniques that are fundamental to all types of kayaking.

• Lesson date is June 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at the Kayak Barn at Lake Ponca.

• For ages 13 and up. The cost is $25.00 per lesson. FREE TO SENIORS 50+

KAYAK SUNRISE TOURS

• Take a tour of beautiful Lake Ponca at sunrise. The kayak and the life jacket will be provided, just bring something to drink and your love of the outdoors!

• Tour dates are Thursdays, June 16 thru July 7, from 5:45 to 7:45 a.m., at the Kayak Barn at Lake Ponca.

SCUBA CERTIFICATION

• This will be an Entry Level SCUBA certification taught by a certified instructor. Student will learn the skills needed to become a certified Open Water PADI Diver. After successfully completing the pool session, students will meet at Lake Tenkiller to complete the open water dives portion.

• This a 2-day class on July 9 & 10 and July 16 & 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.

• For ages 10 and older. The cost is $400.00 per participant in the pool and $99.00 at Lake Tenkiller for the open water dives.

PERFORMING ARTS – INTRO TO THEATER 3RD-6TH GRADE

• This Performing Arts Camp at the RecPlex is a 4-day youth camp geared toward a broad introduction of all the fun and exciting elements of theater for actors.

• For 3rd grade to 6th grade. The cost is $75.00. Member discount $20.00

SWIMMING LESSONS AT AMBUC POOL

• American Red Cross Swim Lesson at Ambuc Pool are conducted by certified instructors and adapted for swimmers with little to no water experience as well as more advanced swimmers.

• The June Session is Monday thru Thursday, June 20 thru June 30, with class times of: 9:00 a.m., 9:45 a.m., or 10:30 a.m. at

PAINT NIGHT AT THE RECPLEX

• Paint Night at the RecPlex is returning this summer! It will help you tap into your creative side, no matter what your skill level is. Painting is a great way to relax and have fun.

• For ages 12 and older. The cost is $35.00 per class.

4TH OF JULY EVENING CELEBRATION AT WENTZ POOL

• There will be all-you-can-eat hotdog and hamburger meals and swimming with a beautiful view of the Fireworks Show as a bonus! There will only be 150 tickets available, so don’t miss out!

• On the 4th of July, the fun begins at 7:30 p.m., the pool closes at 9:30 p.m., the Fireworks Show is at 9:50 p.m. and swimming will continue after the show until midnight.

SEW FUN!

• This camp is geared toward beginner sewers. Students will attend 4 once-weekly classes. All materials are provided. Students are welcome to bring their own sewing machines.

• For ages 10 and up. The cost is $75.00.

ZOO VOUCHERS AVAILABLE WITH CHECK-OUT AT THE PONCA CITY LIBRARY

The Ponca City Library proudly hosts another year of the Read for Adventure program. The Read for

Adventure program “aims to promote literacy within families, increase their contact with the outdoors and provide an outlet for invaluable, nature-inspired discoveries.” The Oklahoma City Zoo’s mission is to educate Oklahomans about wildlife and wild places. By partnering with the Metropolitan Library, the zoo staff hopes to inspire children to read about wildlife and then connect with those same animals and plants found at the zoo.

The Metropolitan Library System and Oklahoma City Zoo have released a new book called Juniper’s Butterfly Garden for this year’s program.

How to obtain a voucher:

Any Oklahoma resident who has a library card in good standing at the Ponca City Library and checks out

Juniper’s Butterfly Garden will receive 1 voucher good for general admission for 4 people to the Oklahoma City Zoo. Card users may only receive the zoo voucher once.

HEAD FAMILY PC FAMILY AND FRIENDS CELEBRATION

Danny, Carey, and C.R. Head would like to celebrate Ponca City. This incredible family will host a Ponca City Family and Friends Celebration Thursday, June 30 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. They will set up at Lake Ponca with a huge tent across from the Ambuc Playground and Pavilion.

Danny’s BBQ Head Quarters, Inc. plan to feed 5,000 people free. This is an incredible gift to Ponca City. They are excited we survived the Pandemic and we are moving forward.

You are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for a picnic style meal or you are more than welcome to grab your free dinner and take it home. The City of Ponca City will provide some picnic tables.

The Chamber is go grateful and excited for this fun event and know it will be a great way to kick off the 4 of July Holiday.

SUMMER FOOD PROGRAM AT FIRST LUTHERAN SCHOOL

FIRST LUTHERAN SCHOOL is participating in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which provides nutritious meals at no charge to Children during the summer vacation. Children ages 1 - 18, regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, are eligible to receive meals through SFSP. A person 19years of age and over who has a mental or physical disability (as determined by a state or local education agency) and who participates during the school year in a public or private, non-profit school program (established for the mentally and physically disabled) is also eligible to receive meals. Meals will be provided at the sites and times as follows:

NOC BOYS’ BASKETBALL CAMP JULY 5-9

New Northern Oklahoma College Men’s Basketball Coach Patrick Nee announced Mavs Basketball Camp July 5-9.

The morning session (9 a.m. – noon) serves students in Grades K-4, the afternoon session (1 p.m. – 4 p.m.) is for athletes in Grades 5-8.

The camp includes skills, games, awards, and special guests.

The cost is $60 per athlete, make checks payable to Patrick Nee Basketball Camp.

RIVERFRONT DANCE & TRAVEL CLUB

A new club is coming to Ponca City for area seniors to share resources and lives, focusing on fellowship, travel, and especially dancing.

KAY COUNTY COMMUNITY HEALTH NEEDS SURVEY

The Kay County Community Health Needs Survey is an anonymous survey of county residents and is part of the comprehensive Community Health Needs Assessment process. The survey allows the Health Department and community partners to understand what residents see as the most important health issues affecting the community. The survey will help identify the strengths, needs, and challenges. The survey results will help guide planning and action to improve the health of residents who live, work, and play in communities across our administrative district and provide the foundation for improving and promoting good health.

The survey may be accessed from the Kay County Health Department Facebook page or at https://bit.ly/3sXddxL. Individuals without internet access may contact the Kay County Health Department at (580) 762-1641 or (580) 363-5520 for a paper copy of the survey. Paper copies should be returned to the county health department upon completion.
