The top professional rugby lead in North America is set to crown another champion Saturday afternoon up in the northeast part of the United States, as the Seattle Seawolves look to reclaim their title as the best team on the continent, as they take on Rugby New York for the Major League Rugby Championship.

After a disappointing end to their 2021 campaign, the Seawolves are back in the championship match for the third time in the four season history of the league. They were not as dominant as they had been in the past, going just 10-7 and finishing third in the Western Conference, but they heated up towards the end of the regular season, which carried into the playoffs. Following their last defeat on May 15, Seattle has won four-straight contests, including hammering the San Diego Legion in the Western Eliminator, before outlasting the Houston SaberCats in the conference final. They are looking to win their third title, as they won each of MLR’s first two championships.

New York comes into the contest having won their last four matches as well. They too ended up third in their conference, posting an 11-5 record, tying themselves with Rugby ATL in the East. However, after getting hammered on home soil by Rugby ATL in the third-to-last match of the regular season, ATL had the home-field advantage in their eliminator match. New York was able to pull out a 26-19 victory, before taking down the top-seeded New England Free Jacks in the conference final to punch their ticket to their first MLR Championship match.

The last two championship matches have seen the host compete for the title. In 2019, the Seawolves defeated the host Legion at Toreno Stadium in San Diego, while the L.A. Giltinis knocked off ATL in the final at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum last year.

These teams met in New Jersey just last month during the regular season, with New York pulling out a 30-22 victory.
