6-time South Boston Speedway champ Peyton Sellers is so well known to race fans, he's got a section of the grandstand named after him.
Saturday night, the Danville native hopes fans will get a view from that section of him, entering victory lane during the 'Superstar Racing Experience' main event.
"The opportunity is there, I'm looking forward to it." the 2021 Advance Auto Parts National Champion said, ahead of the SRX series hitting prime time TV Saturday night. "To be able to be that guy, and represent the talent that's out there at the short track levels is a real honor for me."
But SRX - modeled after the IROC series of the past - promises new challenges for drivers. Hardly any practice, no spotters, and world class drivers like Tony Stewart and Helio Castronieves around every turn. Still, Sellers has a distinct advantage. He knows this track, having won the last 5 season championships at South Boston - 6 overall.
"The great thing about Peyton is this isn't his first time on a national stage." Speedway GM Chase Brashears says. "He knows what he has to accomplish, and we're all rooting for him to be that home town guy."
Whatever the result, Saturday isn't about points, titles, or payouts. It's a chance for South Boston, and the little guy, to be represented in a national stage.
"I'm representing the guys who get to go out to work all week, work on their cars at night, and go race on the weekends." Sellers adds. "I'm not going to put any pressure on myself. I'm gonna go drive the wheels off that thing, and put on a show for the fans."
The SRX main event drops the green flag at 8pm Saturday night.
