Legion, Junior Legion both drop doubleheaders

HURON — The Huron Post 7 Legion and Junior Legion both dropped doubleheaders this week at Memorial Stadium.

The Legion team faced off Tuesday with Mitchell, dropping the twinbill by scores of 11-1 and 9-4.

In the first game, Mitchell came away with a run-rule victory despite the game being in Huron’s favor for the first four innings and a one-run ballgame until the sixth inning.

Huron scored first in the bottom of the first as Tyson Lien doubled in Max Kranzler and the first three Huron hitters of the game, but once Mitchell escaped that jam, the home team failed to string multiple hits together the rest of the way, twice running into outs on the basepaths after getting a runner on base.

With a 2-1 lead heading into the top of the sixth inning, Mitchell scored nine runs to put the game out of reach.

Johnny Hernandez opened the game on the mound for Post 7, tossing 5 1/3 innings, allowing six runs and striking out seven Mitchell batters.

Hernandez was also the only Huron hitter to reach base multiple times, as he had a single and a pair of walks. Lien and Kolby Hofer powered doubles during the game and Kranzler stole a base.

Huron captured the lead in the nightcap with a 4-run third inning, but Mitchell responded with a 7-run fifth inning to come away with the 9-4 victory.

Layne Wenzel tossed 3 1/3 innings to open the game for Huron, allowing two runs and striking out a pair of Mitchell hitters. Kranzler struggled in 1 2/3 innings, allowing seven Mitchell runs to score, despite striking out four. Jack Pederson closed out the game with two innings of hitless relief, striking out two.

Post 7 put together 10 hits with three hitters garnering multiple hits. Hernandez, Dawsyn Rogers, and Peyton Grace each had a pair of singles. Lien drove out a triple and stole a base.

Huron’s record is 5-10 after the losses. After a road doubleheader against Sioux Falls West Thursday, Post 7 will next be in action Tuesday again in Sioux Falls, facing off with Post 15 for a doubleheader.

Jackson Mattke takes the throw at second base as Yankton’s Keenan Wagner (18) slides in and looks to first base to complete a double play during Huron’s doubleheader against Yankton Wednesday at Memorial Stadium.

The Huron Junior Legion squad dropped their two games against Yankton on Wednesday by scores of 8-5 and 13-4.

In the first game, a 6-run Yankton fourth inning proved too much for Huron to overcome, and seven errors by the home squad let a potential win slip away.

Kolby Hofer started the game on the mound, and he tossed three innings, allowing three runs, with only one of those runs earned, striking out three. Tanner Gilbert took over in relief, throwing three innings of one-hit relief, but giving up five runs, only one of which was earned. Bubba Peterson closed out the game with a scoreless inning of relief.

The Huron offense banged out eight hits, with Jack Pederson leading the way, getting on base four times due to four walks. Hofer was the only Huron hitter with multiple hits, rapping out a double and a single. He also stole a base.

Trace Wenz added a double.

In the second game, Yankton scored nine runs between the fifth and sixth innings to blow open a close game.

Logan Leyendecker opened the game on the mound for the home club, going 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run. Brady Feenstra allowed six runs in two innings of relief and Pederson allowed five runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief before Wenz closed out the game by allowing one run over 1 1/3 innings.

The Huron offense tallied eight hits, with Wenz, Gilbert, and Kaiden Ogle each slapping a pair of singles.
Hofer had a double and Bubba Peterson stole a base.

The Junior Legion’s record falls to 4-5 with the losses. The Junior Legion team will participate in a tournament in Yankton over the weekend.
