IN THE RACE FOR MONTEREY COUNTY SUPERVISOR IN DISTRICT 2... GLENN CHURCH AND REGINA GAGE ADVANCED TO THE NOVEMBER RUNOFF. GAGE AND SALINAS MAYOR KIMBLEY CRAIG WERE IN A BATTLE FOR SECOND PLACE. GAGE EDGED OUT CRAIG BY JUST á18á VOTES. IN THE RACE FOR SHERIFF, TINA NIETO AND JOE MOSES WILL FACE OFF IN NOVEMBER. NIETO CAME CLOSE TO HITTING THE 50- PERCENT PLUS ONE THRESHOLD NEEDED WIN OUTRIGHT. SHE WON 49- PERCENT OF THE VOTE. ANOTHER CLOSE RACE WAS MEASURE B IN DEL REY OAKS. Monterey County certifies election results
On Friday, the Monterey County Registrar of Voters certified the results of the June 7 primary election.Certification finalizes the results of three close races that have been undecided since election day.In the race for Monterey County Supervisor in District 2, Glenn Church and Regina Gage advanced to the November runoff. Church remained in the top spot since election night. Gage and Kimbley Craig, the mayor of Salinas, were in a battle for second place. The certified results show Gage edged out Craig by just 18 votes.In the race for sheriff, Tina Nieto failed to reach the 50% plus one threshold needed to avoid a runoff in November. Nieto won 48.9% of the vote. She will now face Joe Moses in the general election.Nieto could become the first woman, the first Latina and the first openly LGBTQ+ person to hold the position.Another close race was Measure B in Del Rey Oaks. The final results show the measure failed by just 12 votes. The defeat is seen as a big win for the Fort Ord Regional Trail and Greenway (FORTAG) and the extended Monterey County Recreation Trial.According to the registrar of voters, 64,741 of the county's 208,274 registered voters cast a ballot during the primary election. That puts turnout at 31.08%.
