People across the country woke up to the news of the Supreme Court overturning Roe V. Wade, Friday.
Communities are now starting to react to the news, including in Southeastern Iowa.
Libbey Horvath, a college student back in town for the summer, decided she needed to take immediate action. She stood alone beside the Wapello County Courthouse, with only a poster and a megaphone.
Melissa Montgomery was on her way back into town from work, when she spotted Horvath.
Montgomery told KTVO she felt compelled to go out and support her.
“I came by the courthouse and saw Libby protesting for our rights and I wanted to support her," said Montgomery.
Montgomery brought her friend, Zoe Stevens, along to support Horvath.
The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the 50-year-old decision deeply saddened Montgomery.
I feel sad for my grandmother and for her fight for her rights," said Montgomery. "I also feel sad for future generations and the fact they will have to fight for their rights because of this decision.
Several lawmakers, including Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, have shared their reaction to the Supreme Court’s ruling.
In a statement Reynolds expressed her approval of the Supreme Court's decision.
"The Supreme Court’s greatest moments have come when it allows America to embody more perfectly the enduring truth on which it was founded: that all human beings, without exception, are created equal," said Reynolds. "By that measure, today’s historic decision is clearly one such moment. But the fight for life is not over. As Governor, I won’t rest until every unborn Iowan is protected and respected."
Montgomery said she just wants future generations to have the right to make their own choice.
I am prolife for myself, but for others I am prochoice. They don’t have to make the decision that I choose to make, they need to make the decision they can live with," said Montgomery. "We don’t have to fight, we're all on the same team if we want to be.”
Currently, abortion remains legal in Iowa. It is not one of the 13 states with trigger laws.
