PEORIA (25 News Now) - A local nonprofit just received a big grant from the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority.

Peoria’s Tri-County Urban League got just over $68,000, which leaders say will go toward educational programs and job training.

The organization teaches people how to achieve economic empowerment, and offers services like daycare, a food pantry, mentoring services and career exploration.

The president says this money is a huge help to the students.

“There’s a place to go where people care about them, and care about their futures deeply, sincerely and fiercely,” president & CEO Dawn Harris Jeffries said. “Regardless of where you are in life, wherever you jump off that train, we can get you back on.”

Dr. Jeffries says now that funding is secured, they’ll enter a research phase to pinpoint which directions the money will go.
