No tuition hike for UT university system

UTC is the best bargain in the entire system, plus larger HOPE scholarships this fall

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (WDEF) – The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees approved a budget on Friday that holds the line on tuition for the second time in the last 3 years.

“Rising inflation is hitting our students and families particularly hard,” UT Board of Trustees Chair John Compton said.

“Due in large part because of Gov. Bill Lee and our Tennessee General Assembly’s historic higher education budget of $137 million, we are in the fortunate position to keep tuition and mandatory fees flat for FY 22-23.”

The move includes both the UTK and UTC campuses.

The budget also includes a 4% salary pool for employees, representing the largest salary pool increase in UT’s history ($28.3 million).

UTC officials point out that the Chattanooga campus remains the most affordable university in the UT system.

“In addition to offering in-state undergraduates the lowest tuition and fees of any UT campus in the state of Tennessee, UTC also provides substantial regional and border state tuition waivers to students from counties and states adjacent to Tennessee.”

UTC officials also say that the expansion of HOPE scholarships from the lottery is a big win for students, also.

The scholarships jump to $4,500 for full-time freshmen and sophmores and $5,700 for juniors and seniors, beginning this fall.
