Several decades ago, an automotive collaboration between a storied luxury marque and one of the biggest names in fashion didn’t quite materialize, leading to the production of just a single vehicle. The parties involved were Jaguar and Paolo Gucci (in other words, the member of the family recently played by Jared Leto onscreen) — and the result of their work was slated to be auctioned off this week.
Now, however, there’s been a new development — the car in question has been withdrawn from the auction.
A recent article at Robb Report offers a good rundown of the car’s provenance. The article notes that Gucci came up with the idea of a Jaguar collaboration that would be paired with a set of luggage, and that his interest was piqued by the Jaguar XJ-6 — specifically, the Lynx Eventer, a shooting brake variant of the car in question that upped the luxury factor even more.
One car was made, at which point legal troubles ensnared the entire venture, as Paolo was no longer working for Gucci and thus ran into trouble using the Gucci name.
Bonhams was set to auction off the vehicle as part of an auction accompanying the Goodwood Festival of Speed — where the current owner had purchased this unique vehicle in 2016 — and was estimated to sell for between £70,000 and £100,000. (Alternately, between $85,000 and $122,000.) However, a look at the listing now reveals that the Eventer has since been withdrawn from the auction.
The reasons for why remain unclear. A notice on the listing simply says, “This Lot has been withdrawn from the sale.” Whatever the reasons for that may be, this Eventer still has plenty of history to make.
