SAY THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY SUSPECTS THE ROWAN COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE AS IDENTIFIED A MAN WHO WAS SHOT BY A DEPUTY OFFICIAL SAY A DEPUTY RESPONDED TO A VEHICLE THAT HAD CRASHED INTO A TREE THIS HAPPENED LAST NIGHT ON ROCK SPRINGS DRIVE DOWN IN SALISBURY WHEN EMERGENCY CREWS GOT THERE. THEY WERE CONFRONTED BY 46 YEAR OLD STEPHEN RAY JOHNSON. THEY SAY WHO WAS ARMED WITH A KNIFE INVESTIGATORS SAY JOHNSON THEN CONFRONTED THE DEPUTY WHO SHOT AND KILLED HIM. THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS THE INCIDENT WAS CAPTURED ON BODY CAMERA AND A PRELIMINARY REVIEW SHOWS. THE SHOOTING WAS IN THEIR VIEW JUSTIFIED RIGHT NOW THAT DEPUTY IS ON ADMINISTRATIVE. A man who was shot and killed by a deputy has been identified.A Rowan County Sheriff's Office deputy responded to a vehicle that had crashed into a tree Thursday night on Rock Springs Drive in Salisbury. When emergency crews arrived, they were confronted by Steven Ray Johnson, 46, who was armed with a knife.Investigators say Johnson confronted the deputy, who then shot and killed the suspect. The sheriff's office said the incident was captured on the deputy's body camera and a preliminary review shows the shooting was justified. The deputy was placed on administrative leave while the SBI and sheriff's office investigate the incident.
