MARIETTA, Ga. — Police have arrested a man they say ran over a disabled man and then drove off. The victim is still in the hospital with a long road to recovery.

Robert Morrison is getting so much love and support from the Marietta community.

“He cares about his neighborhood and just a good guy. It’s very unfortunate that that happened to him,” said Marietta councilman Johnny Walker.

Just days after Morrison was hit along Wright Street in Marietta, police say they have arrested a man who was behind the wheel and failed to stop.

Santos Rosalio Vincente-Ramos told investigators he hit something. A camera captured his car speeding away afterwards.

“It’s just very unfortunate, but I’m glad that they caught the person,” Walker said. “I’ve named him the mayor of Wright Street because Robert always calls me when there’s problems or if I need to fix a cracked sidewalk.”

The community has been stepping up to help Morrison the entire time he’s been in the hospital.

Earlier this week, volunteers from a local church cleaned up Morrison’s yard.

“When we heard of this accident, it quickened us to do some work, but the truth is we’d already planned to come out and do some landscape work and some work on the house,” said Paul Hill with Ministry of Music for First Baptist Church Marietta.

Morrison is disabled and the primary caregiver for his mother, who is also disabled.

“They’re going to need some help. They’re a very deserving family,” Walker said.

Even though police say the driver was drinking that night, city officials told Channel 2 they did a speed study out here about a month ago.

Leaders plan to address the problem of speeding during the next council meeting.
