A handful of people in Dade County say they're stuck on the wrong side of the tracks.
Meaning, a train parked for more than 24 hours has forced them to climb between the cars if they want to go anywhere besides their homes.
We have confirmed the train is owned by CSX. The company released a statement Friday afternoon, which you can read below.
The train is parked on a track near Old Hooker Cemetery Road in Wildwood, just south of the Tennessee state line.
The handful of people living here say they often lose their only way in or out of their home.
Peggy and Brady Fults own property on the "wrong" side of the tracks.
"This is our train that keeps us blocked 3-4 times a week. this time its been here over 24 hours," they told us on Friday.
People tell us just to get out of their homes and into town, they either have to crawl under or over this huge chunk of metal -- or even sometimes go around the train to the other side, but only if they're lucky.
The way it stopped this time, Jesse Thornton can carefully walk around the front to get to his home.
But that's not always the case.
"We slept in our car overnight," he told us.
Four months ago, NewsChannel 9 spoke to Thornton about this same issue. He says he and his 86-year-old wife had to sleep in their truck because the train blocked this road for miles on either side.
"My wife is a diabetic, she has heart problems. worried we can't get her to the hospital," he said.
We took those concerns to CSX. In February, the company told us it had to stop here because the train crew reached the maximum hours of service allowed under federal law.
The Fultzes say they've called Dade County Commissioners, law enforcement and CSX multiple times since the problems started about two years ago.
But they can't seem to get anyone on track to fix it.
In response to our inquiries, CSX released a statement apologizing to the families. It reads:
CSX works hard to limit the impact of rail operations on the communities we serve and understand that stopped trains can be an inconvenience for our neighbors. We apologize for any delays caused as a result of our train parked near Hooker Cemetery Road in Dade County. Our operations team is working to safely move the train as soon as possible.
There are times when mechanical and operational issues could result in blocked crossings, as well as when trains stop for mandatory safety inspections or federally-regulated crew changes. CSX strives to be a good neighbor and we appreciate the patience of motorists waiting for our trains to safely pass through the area as we serve customers throughout the region.”
We followed up with CSX about when the train will be moved. Just after 3 p.m. Friday, they told us it would be moved within the next hour.
We continue to work to learn more, and will keep you posted.
