SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – California and Bay Area legislators are blasting the U.S. Supreme Court's historic decision on Friday to overturn Roe v. Wade, ending the nearly 50-year-old constitutional protections on abortions.

For more, stream KCBS Radio now.

While the high court's decision was expected following a leaked draft opinion last month, the announcement still devastatingly reverberated across the country.

With the landmark case officially struck down, 22 states have laws in place that will immediately ban abortions or severely restrict access to them. However, California is expected to not only keep abortion rights already in place, but also strengthen those protections, as outlined by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

In the hours since the decision was announced, reaction has poured in from across the California political landscape, mostly unified in their fury over the ruling.

KCBS Radio has compiled state and local leaders' reactions below.

The list will be updated as more statements are made.
