BOUNCE BACK GEM: Doenges Boys recover from game 1 loss, outfox Bandits in nightcap

Perhaps no regular season opponent the past decade, or so, has created a more fiery rally for the Bartlesville Doenges Ford Indians than the Three Rivers Bandits.

Once again the programs clashed again Wednesday at Bill Doenges Memorial Stadium and Rigdon Field.

Once again, they split back-to-back games.

The Bandits caught the Indians’ offense flat-footed to rack up a 10-1 victory in the first game.

Bartlesville managed just four hits — albeit Jakob Hall smacked a triple and a single and scored the only run.

Haden Fiddler and Cole Hancock added a single apiece.

The top of the Indians’ order plucked a stringless guitar for the sound of silence, finishing 0-for-10 among the top four batters, although Brenden Asher and Harrison Clark each drew a walk.

Hall batted in the five hole, followed by Fiddler and Hancock. Hancock also put down a sacrifice hit.

The Indians’ pitching staff collided against a motivated Three Rivers offense that lashed nine hits and scored nine earned runs.

Matthew Winters, Daniel Barham and Myson VanWinkle each took turns pitching. Barham turned in a solid outing by giving up one hit and two runs (another one unearned) in 3.0 innings. He walked two and struck out two.

VanWinkle didn’t give up a walk, allowed two hits and one run in one frame of work.

For Three Rivers, Denver Hamilton clubbed two doubles and a triple and drove in two runs.

Hunter Dearman added a double and RBI.

The Indians dusted themselves off from the loss, however, and snapped back with dogged resolve in the nightcap.

Indians 3, Three Rivers 2

Bartlesville manager John Pannell called on Hall to start on the bump in game two — a savvy decision.

Hall turned in four innings of shutout, no-walk ball with scattering two hits and striking out seven.

Fiddler then turn in two innings of middle relief, giving up two hits, two walks and two runs while ringing up four strikeouts.

Hancock closed up the win by keeping Three Rivers scoreless in the seventh. He allowed a hit and a walk and K’d one batter.

Bartlesville’s offense didn’t fare much better (3-of-21, one RBI) — but it did enough to pick up the win.

Kaeden Young, Clark and Hayden Catlin each ripped a single for Bartlesville, Clark recorded the only RBI — the winning RBI.

In the second inning, Indians’ hitter Josh Weber belted a ground ball that resulted in a two-run error, scoring Barham and Catlin, to put the Indians ahead, 2-0.

An inning later, Clark singled home Young to increase the lead to 3-0.

Three Rivers finally rallied with two runs in the top of the fifth and had the potential tying run on third base and go-ahead tally on first.

But, Indian catcher Karson Lee threw out the runner on first trying to steal second and then retired the final batter of the inning on a grounder.

Three Rivers left runners stranded at third and second in the top of the sixth — with Fiddler striking out three-straight batters.

Three Rivers also put two runners on base in the seventh, but came away empty after Alan Covarrubias recorded the final out on a pop fly catch near first.

Next up, the Indians play host Thursday through Sunday to the Turf and Dirt College Showcase at Doenges Stadium.

Several college coaches, and at least one pro scout (Boston Red Sox), will be on hand to watch players from several regional teams showcase their skills in drills, situational looks and competition. The event is slated as an all-day affair, with the skills session in the morning and the games in the afternoon.
