CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — According to the Chillicothe Police Department, a three-year-old child was found wandering the streets on Thursday.
Officers responded to the area of East Main Street after receiving a call from a motorist who said they found a small child walking in the middle of traffic on the busy roadway.
The passer-by told police that “there were no adults around, so he ran over, grabbed the child out of the street, and walked him over to the sidewalk.”
The report provided to the Guardian said that officers canvassed the immediate area near Hildegarten and East Main Street, but no one, police say, recognized the child.
The three-year-old was transported to the Ross County Law Complex as police searched for the child’s parents.
A short time later, officials said, they made contact with an individual familiar with the child. The officers again responded to the area of Hildergarten, where they located the babysitter. The sitter, reports say, told officers that the toddler was allowed to go down the street with a few other children to play. The residence, officials said, was 10 houses down from where the child left and was well outside of the visible range of the babysitter.
The toddler’s parents were contacted by authorities and were advised of the incident. No charges were filed by police at the time, and the case was turned over to Child Protective Services for a continued investigation. The three-year-old was not injured in the incident.
