Abortion rights groups in Alabama are planning protests in response to Friday’s Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

The POWER House, an organization that provides clinic escorts in Montgomery, announced plans today for a protest near the state capitol. Another protest is planned for Birmingham on Sunday at 10 a.m. at Kelly Ingram Park.

The Yellowhammer Fund, which raises money to provide abortion care, is planning a protest in Birmingham on Saturday at Linn Park.

Another Birmingham protest called the Rally for Reproductive Rights and organized by Alabama Rally Against Injustice will happen Sunday.

A Rally for Reproductive Rights in Huntsville is also scheduled for Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Madison County Courthouse.

On Monday, protesters plan to gather in Tuscaloosa at 5 p.m. at 2005 University Boulevard.

On Tuesday, organizers in Jasper will hold a demonstration at 10 a.m. at 219 19th St. W.

In 2019, when Alabama lawmakers passed one of the nation’s strictest bans on abortion, hundreds of protesters gathered in cities across the state. A federal judge blocked the law, but Alabama officials will seek to have that lifted after Friday’s Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

Abortion clinics in the state stopped performing procedures after the decision was announced. Abortions will be illegal across much of the South in the coming weeks and months. The decision was cheered by anti-abortion activists in Alabama who have played a key role promoting laws to challenge Roe, a 1973 decision.

States will now be able to regulate abortions. The opinion in the case found that abortion was not a protected Constitutional right.
