BLOOMINGTON (25 News Now) - Bloomington Police say one person is dead after an overnight Friday car crash.

In a release, police say that at around 1:25 a.m., officers witnessed a car drive through two red lights on Market Street - at Center and Madison streets.

The car had a minor accident at Lee Street with another vehicle stopped at the stop sign. That driver reported no injuries.

Police attempted to initiate a traffic stop as the suspect car continued without stopping or slowing down. The traffic stop was terminated at Oak and Mulberry streets as the car continued driving north.

At 1:27 a.m., a caller reported a vehicle on fire at Locust Street and White Oak Road, finding the same suspect car.

Police say the car crashed into a power pole, causing the lines to come down.

Firefighters arrived on scene and extinguished the fire.

The driver was pronounced deceased on scene.

No other information is being released at this time.

The crash is being investigated by the police department and McLean County Coroner’s Office.

“We are saddened by this traffic accident,” said Bloomington Police Chief Jamal Simington. “Our condolences go out to the yet unidentified driver’s family and friends. As outdoor temperatures increase, so will the users of the highway system, including pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcycles. Please be mindful and alert of these changes in activities. Be alert, watch your speed, and eliminate distractions. The Bloomington Police Department needs everyone to do their part to help us reach our goal of reducing crashes by 10% this year.”
