FLINT-- At the movies this weekend, we get two new films-- One about a music icon, the other is one to get your heart racing. It's quit possible that both will get your heart racing.
We will start with "The Black Phone," the latest horror offering from the venerable scare factory that is Blumehouse Productions.
The film stars Ethan Hawke as a sadistic, masked killer who is holding a 13-year old boy, played by Mason Thames, in a soundproof basement. When a disconnected phone on the wall starts ringing, young Finney Shaw answers and discovers that he can har the voices of previous victims and they are all dead-set on making sure what happened to them doesn't happen to Finney.
When it comes to shocker films, Blumehouse has hit nothing but home runs in my book. "The Black Phone" is on my to-see list!
Also opening this weekend is "Elvis," an epic, big-screen spectacle exploring the King of Rock and Roll's live and music. It's Elvis Presley seen through his complicated relationship with manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
The film covers more than 20 years-- from Presley's rise to fame, to his unprecedented stardom at a time when the cultural landscape in America was evolving.
Austin Butler stars as Elvis. Tom Hanks plays Parker and Olivia DeJonge plays Priscilla Presley.
I have been looking forward to this film since first seeing the trailer. I think it will rate right up there with "Rocketman," which was an Elton John biopic, and "Bohemian Rhapsody," about the life of Queen front man Freddie Mercury.
Box Office Pro sees "Elvis" gyrating its way to number one this weekend, just not at blockbuster pace. The tracking site projects the film will earn $38 million , knocking two-time winner Jurassic World Dominion to second place at $31.5 million. "Top Gun: Maverick" and "Lightyear" and "The Black Phone" round out the Top Five. But, it is worth noting that "Lightyear" has underperformed and Blumehouse films are quite popular with horror afficianados. I would not be surprised if "The Black Phone" leapfrogs Buzz and his crew.
ENJOY!
