Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Meyer have been crushing co-parenting since splitting in 2016 — but it’s “a lot of work,” she says.
The jewelry designer, 45, described the effort she and the actor, 46, put into “stay[ing] on track to stay a family” with their two children, Ruby, 15, and Otis, 13, in Thursday’s “World’s First Podcast” episode.
“It was a choice, and it was trusting in, like, the universe has got our back,” Meyer explained. “But let me tell you something, the work is a motherf–ker.”
Thanks to their diligence, the former couple now have a “beautiful family,” with the Los Angeles native calling their “beautiful breakup” the “most beautiful experience” of her life.
“Now we talk about our significant others [like], ‘Hey, you got the kids? I’m going for a weekend away,’” Meyer told Sara Foster and Gabby Bernstein. “Now it’s like … ‘Hey, I’m having a hard day’ or ‘Hey, you did this, it really bummed me out.’”
Meyer, who wed the “Spider-Man” star in September 2007, gushed that she would “do anything in the world” for her ex-husband.
“I can’t even explain [it],” she said of their bond. “He is my brother. I love him to death.”
Although the duo called it quits in October 2016, Meyer didn’t officially file for divorce from Maguire until October 2020.
The following month, she requested joint legal and physical custody of Ruby and Otis.
Meyer and the “Great Gatsby” star called the now-teenagers their “first priority” in their initial separation statement, describing their plans to continue raising them “with enduring love, respect and friendship.”
In 2018, the Syracuse University grad shared her co-parenting advice with Us Weekly, saying that the ultimate goal is to avoid making her children “unhappy.”
Meyer explained, “Remember that you love your kids equally more than anything in the world and that you want the best for them.”
