JONESVILLE — The Coldwater Redbirds 16U Mickey Mantle team battled to a hard fought split with Jonesville Thursday night, taking game one of the twin bill 5-3 before falling in the nightcap 4-3.

Game one of the two game set saw a pair of Coldwater pitchers combine for a five inning no-hitter despite allowing three unearned runs on the way to the 5-3 win.

Hunter Tinervia secured the win on the mound for Coldwater after throwing three innings in the start, allowing no hits and three unearned runs with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Dreyden Feltner recorded the Save on the mound for the Redbirds, throwing two full innings while allowing no hits or runs with two walks and four strikeouts.

Coldwater led 1-0 after one inning thanks to a Tyson Roby fly ball, allowing Riley Miner to score, giving Coldwater the 1-0 lead.

Jonesville came back with two unearned runs in the second inning to take the lead thanks to throwing error that allowed two runners to score with two men on base. The Comets added another run in the third inning after an error put a man on first, who then promptly stole second and third. The Comet runner would come home on an error, giving the Comets a 3-1 lead.

Coldwater came right back, tying up the game with two runs in the fourth inning thanks to a Michael Nichols RBI single, allowing Tinervia and Drake Thornton to score, bringing the score to 3-3. After back-to-back singles from Feltner and Miner a bases loaded squeeze bunt from Eddie Pool allowed Nichols to score, giving the Redbirds the 4-3 lead after four innings.

Coldwater added an insurance run in the top of the fifth after Roby reached via a hit by pitch. Roby advanced to second and third on a pair of wild pitches and eventually scored on a throwing error, giving the Redbirds the 5-3 lead.

Jonesville got two runners on in the fifth however the Redbird defense took care of business as Feltner struck out the final two batters to secure the 5-3 win.

Riley Miner had a big game at the plate for Coldwater, going 3 for 3 with three singles and a run scored while Drake Thornton also finished at 3 for 3 with three singles and a run scored.

Also adding to the Coldwater effort was Eddie Pool with a single and an RBI; Tyson Roby with a run scored; Hunter Tinervia with a single, a walk and a run scored; Ian Stough with a single and a walk; Michael Nichols with a single, two Rbis and a run scored; and Dreyden Feltner with two singles.

Game two of the doubleheader saw Jonesville score a run in the bottom of the fourth inning that proved to be the difference, going on to take the 4-3 win despite again going hitless in the contest.

Coldwater scored two runs in the second inning to lead 2-0, only to see Jonesville score two in the second and one in the third to lead 3-2. The Redbirds tied up the game with a run in the top of the fourth however Jonesville came right back with a run in the bottom of the fourth to retake the one run lead. Coldwater went down in order in the top of the fifth as Jonesville took the 4-3 win.

Evan Porter took the loss on the mound for Coldwater after throwing three innings in the start, allowing no hits and three runs, two earned, with three walks and six strikeouts.

Riley Miner finished out the game on the mound after throwing one inning and allowing one unearned run with two walks and two strikeouts.

Tyson Roby led the Coldwater offense with a double and a run scored. Also adding to the Redbird effort was Miner with a walk; Evan Porter with a run scored; Hunter Tinervia with a single, a walk and a run scored; Drake Thornton with a single and an RBI; Ian Stough with a walk; and Parker Fraley with a single.

With the two game split the Coldwater 16U Redbirds now sit at 1-3 for the summer and will next see action Sunday when they host the Colon Magi.

Coldwater 15U Mantle drops two versus Lumen Christi

COLDWATER — The Coldwater Redbird 15U Mickey Mantle team dropped two games to Lumen Christi Thursday night, falling by scores of 22-1 and 14-4.

Game one saw Lumen Christi score early and often, putting up 10 runs in the first inning, nine in the second and three in the third to build a 22-0 lead. Coldwater notched their lone run of the game in the bottom of the third as Jimmy Maynard stole home with two outs in the game, which is where the score would end with Lumen Christi winning 22-1.

Lumen Christi out hit Coldwater 12-1 in the game, with Coldwater’s lone hit coming off the bat of Maynard who roped a single. Nick Shelton drew a pair of walks while Landon Auble also drew a walk.

Able took the loss on the mound for Coldwater, throwing one inning and a third in the start, allowing four hits and 13 runs with nine walks and one strikeout.

Hunter Samulak finished off the game on the mound for Coldwater, throwing an inning and two-thirds, allowing eight hits and nine runs with five walks and two strikeouts.

Game two of the twin bill saw a back-and-forth game turned on its head in the fourth inning as Lumen Christi plated 11 runs in the top of the fourth to go on to take the 14-4 win.

Coldwater led early, holding a slim 2-1 lead after one inning and a 3-2 lead after two. Lumen tied things up with a single run in the third inning before exploding for 11 runs in the fourth to take control. Coldwater added one more run in the fourth but it wasn’t enough as the Redbirds fell 14-4. Lumen Christi out hit Coldwater 17-11 in the victory while also taking advantage of three Coldwater errors.

Logan Smiertka took the loss on the mound for Coldwater after throwing all four innings, allowing 17 hits and 14 runs with one walk and two strikeouts.

Leading the Coldwater offensive effort was Blake Griffith who finished 3 for 3 with three singles, an RBI and a run scored while Carson Neeley also finished a perfect 3 for 3, recording two singles and a double with two runs scored.

Also adding to the Coldwater effort was Logan Smiertka with two singles, an RBI and a run scored; Hunter Samulak with a single and a walk; Jimmy Maynard with a single and an RBI; Landon Auble with a single; and Dominic Diamond with a walk.

With the two game setback the 15U Redbirds now stand at 0-2 on the season. Coldwater will next see action Sunday when they travel to Union City beginning at 5:30 p.m.
