A recent study says any light when you sleep will have negative effects on your health.
That includes falling asleep with the TV on in the background, or even having a night light plugged into the wall.

The study found that exposure to any amount of light during sleep was correlated with a higher prevalence of diabetes, obesity and hypertension in both older men and women, and that people should do their best to avoid or minimize the amount of light they are exposed to during sleep.
