Firefighters have brought under control a fire that damaged five shops on the Atlantic City Boardwalk on Friday morning, a fire official said.

The fire was burning off of St. James Avenue, an Atlantic City Police Department spokesman said.

The Atlantic City Firefighter’s Union said the blaze, which broke out shortly before 9 a.m., near St. James and the Boardwalk, has reached three alarms and said people should avoid the area.

Photos from the scene, including this one posted on Twitter, show large plumes of smoke pouring out from a two-story building at the edge of the Boardwalk.
