KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. — A 37-year-old woman drowned off the coast of the Outer Banks on Thursday around midnight, according to authorities.

Megan Elaine Perry was swimming with her friend, a 31-year-old man, when both of them got caught up in a wave near 1st Street in Kill Devil Hills. After the man surfaced he did not see his friend, police said.

After the man called 911, first responders began searching for the woman but did not find her. The U.S. Coast Guard was notified, according to the Kill Devil Hills Police Department, but they did not begin searching for the woman until the morning.

The woman's body washed ashore at around 6 a.m., just north of Pelican Watch Way in Southern Shores. That's about 7 miles away from where she was reported missing.

Both of the swimmers were Kill Devil Hills residents.

Officials said that ocean conditions were rough at the time.
