What's going on with New York's pro basketball teams?

Against the backdrop of the Nets "superteam" seemingly dissolving before our very eyes, the Knicks pulled off a flurry of curious maneuvers that ultimately seemed to leave fans and observers on social media disappointed and frustrated during the 2022 NBA Draft on Thursday night.

The headliner from the furious wheeling and dealing was the trade that sent point guard Kemba Walker to the Detroit Pistons:

While fans seemed mostly relieved to be rid of Walker after a forgettable lone season in New York, the net result of the trade activity left the Knicks without a first-round pick this year. In the second round, they selected former Duke guard Trevor Keels, a relatively raw prospect who turns 19 in August.

For many observers, the maneuverings seemed like an attempt to free up cap size as a prelude to free agency. Several reports have indicated that the Knicks will make a serious run at unrestricted free-agent guard Jalen Brunson.

Of course, that doesn't mean Brunson will actually end up signing with the Knicks. In fact, some reports have already indicated he will re-sign with the Dallas Mavericks.

The prospect of that very scenario coming to pass left a lot of fans and journalists feeling like the Knicks should have come away with more players on Thursday night, especially after they had the 11th and 13th picks at various points.
