ALBION, MI -- A freight train passing through Albion Friday morning hit and killed an unidentified person allegedly lying on the tracks, police said.

At about 12:30 a.m. June 24, an officer from the Albion Department of Public Safety was approached by the conductor of a westbound Norfolk Southern freight train, who told the officer the train had hit a person on the tracks.

The train had come to a stop near Clinton Street in Albion. The person had been lying on the tracks behind a nearby Shell station, police said.

Officers immediately checked the area and found the victim, who had already died from the injuries suffered from being hit by the train, police said.

At this time, it is unclear why the person was lying on the railroad tracks, police said.

Officers are still working to positively identify the victim, police said. More information will be released when it becomes available.

Anyone with information about this fatal incident is asked to call Det. Billy Lazarus at 517-629-7854.
