Fire danger is rated moderate in far West Texas and in most of East Texas. Everything in between including the Panhandle and Southern Plain is rated high-to-extreme for fires.

Hot, bone dry conditions will cause increased wildfire danger in Texas through the weekend. The Texas A&M Forest Service says elevated fire weather, including triple digit temperatures, low humidity and wind speeds near 15 mph, will cause an increased potential for significant wildfires that may directly hit communities where dry to critically dry vegetation persists.

Brad Smith, head of the Forest Service's Predictive Services Department, says the dryness we are currently seeing across portions of the state is, generally, what we would be experiencing in mid-to-late July.

"Early summer drying in June also introduces the possibility of experiencing a severe late summer fire season" Smith said.
