CASTINE (WGME) -- A Maine town rejected a controversial plan to rent out a historic lighthouse.
The lease on the Dyce Head Lighthouse property in Castine is set to run out at the end of the month.
Some in town wanted to turn the property into a short-term rental business to make money.
The Castine Select Board rejected that proposal, instead deciding to keep the current tenant, Tacy Lameyer.
"There are two things we need from the lighthouse; one is a good ambassador for the town of Castine and the other is someone who pays their rent, and Tracy has done that since she's been here for nine years,” Peter Vogell, the chairman of the Castine Select Board, told WVII.
"It deserves to be given to a family that cares about it and respects it and is consistent and part of the community,” Lameyer said.
The lighthouse was built in 1828.
