The Knoxville Police Department wants to remind residents of Knoxville about setting off fireworks within the city. Knoxville Police Chief Aaron Fuller spoke with KNIA/KRLS News about fireworks rules in Knoxville.

“Fireworks have been a hot topic since they became legal in the state. We can sell fireworks in town, but we can’t shoot them off here in town and it doesn’t matter what day of the week or the Fourth of July, shooting off fireworks in town is illegal. A majority of cities in Iowa have this law for the main reason of the danger factor of catching fire or injury that can come with that. We do receive complaints even though we have not received many this year about fireworks. We just want people to think about their neighbors who may work early, and have dogs, and we have a large veteran population that may suffer from PTSD. Some people may not like fireworks, especially when they are not expecting them, so we ask residents to be courteous to their neighbors.”

The Iowa Legislature made the sale and use of fireworks in the state legal in 2017 and each city and county was given the authority to set their own rules in regard to fireworks
