GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Two suspects remain on the loose after a lengthy police chase that started with an exchange of gunfire between Grand Rapids Police and a passenger of a stolen car early Friday morning.

“At 3:15 this morning, an officer was traveling southbound on Prospect Avenue Southeast just south of Highland Street and observed a vehicle traveling northbound without its headlights on,” Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said during a press conference Friday morning.

When police started approaching the vehicle, investigators say a passenger started firing at police.

An officer fired back at the windshield of the suspect car. The car then drove off leading to a lengthy police chase around Grand Rapids.

“The pursuit ended in the area of Hall and Easter where the individuals exited the car and a foot pursuit and canine tracking took place,” said Winstrom.

Police were able to track down an 18-year-old suspect. He is currently being questioned by police.

Two other people who were in the car at the time remain on the loose, however, police do not believe there is a threat to the public.

The officer involved in Friday morning’s incident will be placed on critical incident leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Police are not identifying the officer, but we do know they have been with the department for over seven years.
