UPDATE 6:42 a.m.: Montgomery County crews have cleared the scene of Friday morning’s tractor-trailer fire along I-81 South.

According to the Montgomery County Fire-EMS Department, crews from the Christiansburg Volunteer Fire Department, Christiansburg Rescue, and Riner Volunteer Rescue Squad were dispatched to the fire at mile marker 116 of I-81 South just after 4 a.m. on Friday, June 24.

When units arrived at the scene, they found the tractor-trailer’s cab fully-engulfed in flames. However, first responders brought the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to the trailer.

VDOT announced shortly before 6:30 a.m. that the incident had been cleared and the southbound right shoulder was back open at mile marker 116.5 on I-81.



MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A tractor-trailer fire broke out along I-81 South early Friday morning, which may cause delays for Montgomery County motorists.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the incident took place at mile marker 116.5 of I-81, where the southbound right shoulder is currently closed.
