BUZZARDS BAY – Three public beaches in Bourne failed water quality testing during the first week of that program carried out by the Barnstable County Health and Environment Department.

Bourne Health Agent Terri Guarino told the Board of Health on June 22 that the failed beaches registered elevated bacteria levels at Patuisset along Hen Cove in Pocasset, Picture Lake also in Pocasset and Sagamore Beach north of the canal at Cape Cod Bay.

Guarino said the beaches passed re-testing 24 hours later. “Those areas failed, but they were not closed,” she said.

The agent said she was not entirely surprised by the readings that came so early in the start of summer. She said the tests were preceded by two days of sustained heavy downpours.

“There was a lot of rapid (roadway) runoff prior to the tests,” Guarino said.
