Jefferson County Sheriff's Office news release:
This morning at 10:27 a.m., deputies responded to a car fire on Hwy 365 at IH10. One of our own Jefferson County citizens, Michelle Hanson, happened to be traveling over the 365 overpass when she saw sparks coming from underneath the car that had just exited IH10.
The young man driving the car didn’t realize that his car was on fire. Michelle sped up and began honking her horn, trying to get his attention. By the time he came to a stop, a fire had started under his car.
Michelle blocked his car at the stop sign and began yelling to alert the young man that his car was on fire. She put him safely in her vehicle and backed off while calling 911 as the car quickly became engulfed in flames.
ESD 4 fire personnel responded and extinguished the fire. The car was a total loss.
Sheriff Stephens happened upon the car fire prior to the arrival of the fire department. She was able to visit with Michelle afterward and commend her on her quick actions.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office would like to recognize Michelle Hanson for her quick actions and for the comfort and care that she gave this young man during his traumatic experience. #OneCountyOneCommunity
