The St. Louis Cardinals jumped on the Milwaukee Brewers early in the finale of their four-game series on Thursday.

First place was on the line for these two teams, and St. Louis entered ahead of Milwaukee by a game in the NL Central division standings after Wednesday night’s win.

With one out in the first and Nolan Gorman on first base, Paul Goldschmidt ripped one into the left field corner that scored Gorman to put St. Louis ahead.

Goldschmidt was able to end up at third base, but the throw to third was wild and Goldschmidt was able to score.

Bally Sports Midwest, the TV home of the Cardinals, tweeted a video of the play.

Goldy’s Hustle

Goldschmidt can hit for sure, but he’s also got a tremendous amount of hustle and discipline.

He read the ball well and managed to take third when the throw to the plate was off-line.

Then he read it well again when Victor Caratini made a wild throw into left field that allowed him to score.

This was a good way to jump on the Brewers if you’re the Cardinals.

They ended up losing the game, 6-4, but the moment remains a fun one to keep watching.

Lately, the Cardinals have really been counting on Goldschmidt to pick up the clutch hits and get the job done for them.

It did not result in a win on Thursday, but fans can rest easy knowing they have an MVP candidate in the lineup on a daily basis.
