Benicia police and fire officials said the grass fire burning on Corte Dorado had not prompted to evacuation orders. The fire started as local and state firefighters battle blazes near Vacaville, Pleasanton and Port Costa on Thursday afternoon.

Della Olm, a spokesperson with the Benicia Fire Department, told KCBS Radio's Jeff Bell and Patti Reising in an interview that residents could smell and see smoke from the Vacaville and Porta Costa fires before the Benicia fire began burning.

All fire crews in Benicia responded to the fire, as well as CAL FIRE air resources. Valero staffers are monitoring local air quality to see if shelter-in-place orders are necessary, she said, because Benicia firefighters helping on other nearby fires had to return to the city once the Corte Dorado blaze ignited.

City officials tweeted on Thursday night that residents in sensitive groups – including people with lung or heart disease, elderly residents, children and pregnant women – "should limit prolonged outdoor activities." All residents should keep their doors and windows closed, setting their air conditioners to recirculate, if possible.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
