UPSON COUNTY, Ga. (WGXA) -- Upson County deputies fatally shot a man who placed a gun in his own mouth, Sheriff Dan Kilgore states.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies were called to an address in the 100 block of North St. in Thomaston around 10:48 p.m. Thursday about an intoxicated man with a gun.
When deputies got to the scene, they discovered 49-year-old Timothy Gravitt behind the home holding a Glock 9mm.
Officials say Gravitt put the gun in his mouth and deputies asked him to put the weapon down.
According to the GBI, Gravitt wanted to harm himself.
Gravitt pointed the gun towards deputies, who sought cover and repeated their requests for him to put the gundown.
Officials say Gravitt ignored the order and pointed his gun at a deputy, who fired off their service weapon and shot Gravitt.
Gravitt was taken to Upson Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The Upson County Sheriff's Office has called the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for assistance in the investigation.
