FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) - The westbound lanes of I-696 in Farmington Hills have reopened after a deadly crash left it closed for nearly eight hours on Thursday.

Michigan State Police officials said a semi truck driver was responsible for the crash, that killed a husband and wife from Northern Michigan and left at least two others injured.

MSP officials said the crash happened shortly before 10:30 a.m. on WB I-696 near the I-275 interchange and confirmed the couple -- a driver and a passenger -- died after a semi truck slammed into the back of their Buck LaCrosse.

Authorities identified the victims as a 72-year-old man and his 69-year-old wife, both from Hawks, Michigan -- about 25 miles inland from Lake Huron, in Presque Isle County.

Troopers investigating the crash said a 57-year-old semi truck driver was traveling on WB I-696 toward I-96 when they were unable to stop for traffic. The truck rear-ended the Buick and "resulted in a chain reaction striking three other vehicles."

The two occupants of the Buick were killed instantly, MSP confirmed.

Two other drivers involved in the crash were taken to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation yielded information that suggests another vehicle was hit, possibly another semi truck who may not realize they were involved in the crash. MSP said the vehicle has blue lettering and will have damage to the passenger side.

Troopers closed the freeway between I-275 and Orchard Lake Road, causing major traffic delays in the area. All traffic had been detoured off the freeway at the Orchard Lake exit, but the freeway reopened around 6 p.m.
