When something destroys your dream - something you worked so hard to achieve - you have choices.
You can give up, or start over.
Karl Neubauer is starting over on his dream, the one he saw go up in flames six weeks ago.
"Coming about a mile from my house I could see the light from the fire," he recalled.
Hollerhorn Distilling in Naples was the dream of Karl and his wife, Melissa. They are foodies and artists and live music lovers. Throw in the distilling, and you have the ingredients that made Hollerhorn - in just a few years in business - a Finger Lakes destination.
"So for about 15 years prior to building Hollerhorn, I was studying. I was working full time then taking a week or two at a time to travel and study distilling with some amazing master distillers," Neubauer said.
Before Hollerhorn, he was a home designer and builder. The skills are coming in handy as he and Melissa pour their hearts and sweat equity into the second edition as they did the first.
And the new one will be a little bigger. Getting a re-do is a bit of a silver lining.
"This is everything Melissa and I have saved and family has loaned and doing all the work ourselves. It was small for a distillery and a music venue," Neubauer said.
The Neubaers' "spirits" are boosted by an incredible amount of support from other distillers and from the small town they call home.
"That seems to be for the biggest takeaway: help your neighbors. Do good when you have the opportunity, and even when you don't, reach out," he said.
Starting over isn't easy, but it helps to know your neighbors and friends have your back.
