Burlington Swim Team

This past Saturday the Burlington Swim Team was in Oakley, Kan. It was a hot and windy day.
“The problem with the wind is that the flags, no matter how tight they are, still move. It makes it hard for any backstroker to keep their stroke count correct,” stated BST coach Jeff Yager. “With that, most of my backstrokers were able to get their turns correctly. They all tried their best and I am proud of them.”
Now comes the Northwest Kansas championship meet in Colby, Kan.
“This is when our swimmers who have collected points throughout the season can possibly place and get a trophy,” Yager said.
Yager had praise for several of his swimmers following the Oakley meet, including a group of boys 13-14 competitors, JD Lutters, Weston Schaal, and Garrett Rogers, who combined to win four gold medals and three silver (Schaal 2 gold, 1 silver; Lutters and Rogers a gold and silver each).
“I was happy to see that because these boys always push each other in practice,” Yager said, also making a nod of praise to several other swimmers.
“Rielle Smith (girls 11-12) has really made improvements from last year. She placed second in two of her events and I have really enjoyed watching her swim. Benton Cure (boys 8-under) has been a powerhouse this year. He is one of my top 8-under swimmers this year. He always has a great attitude and gives his all in practice and swim meets.
“Riley Barnes (boys 15-19) did the 500 this week and he did a great job. We worked all week to try and get his pace right and he definitely improved. Tucker Bailey (boys 8-under) placed sixth in his freestyle and fifth in his backstroke.”
Yager also noted several first-time swimmers with whom he was impressed. They were all boys 8-under, Travis Bailey, Tucker Bailey, Cooper Doty, Jonas Schaal, and Logan Schultz.
