– AEW President & CEO Tony Khan appeared on Busted Open Radio this week, and he discussed the changes AEW had to make to the joint Forbidden Door event with NJPW after World Champion CM Punk was injured. The original planned main event for Forbidden Door was CM Punk vs. NJPW’s Hiroshi Tanahashi. Below are some highlights:

Tony Khan on the original plan for CM Punk vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi at Forbidden Door: “CM Punk got injured. AEW had to find a new main event now that the original plan of Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. CM Punk could no longer go forward.”

On Tanahashi vs. Moxley as the new main event: “[Jon] Moxley vs. Tanahashi is a dream match the fans have been calling for, for years.”

On the TV plans when it was Punk vs. Tanahashi: “I had a lot of plans leading into it, and I think that would’ve been great, and the TV was ready to go, we had a lot of great matches planned in the weeks leading into Forbidden Door.”

Moxley will face Tanahashi for the AEW Interim World Championship on Sunday, June 26 at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door. The event will be held at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, and it will be broadcast live on pay-per-view.
