Police identify victim, suspect in fatal car wash shooting

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The Baton Rouge Police Department has arrested a 19-year-old suspect for murder after he shot a man near Benny’s Express Car Wash on Thursday afternoon. The police are looking for a second suspect.

BRPD is investigating the shooting that happened on the 4100 block of Perkins Road around 1:18 p.m. The police say that the victim, 27-year-old Richard Eackels Sr., had his two children inside the vehicle at the time of the shooting. They were not injured but Eackels died at the scene.

BRPD taken the suspect, 19-year-old Kamayrion Glasper, into custody. He has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder.

The police say that an unidentified adult male was with Eackels at the time of the shooting but fled the scene on foot before they could arrive. The unidentified male is still at large.

Eackels family says he has three children, including a 8 month old baby girl. Police say two children were in the victim’s car during the shooting. The children are okay with no injuries. 

“Unfortunate. sad. crucial. they were there when their loved one died,” said Sgt. L’Jean Mckneely, BRPD spokesperson. “This shooting was an opportunity shooting. Saw the person who was here in the vacuum area and confronted them.” 

Glasper was minorly injured during the shooting and was arrested at a local hospital.

The motive for the shooting is still under investigation.

Almost one year ago, a road rage incident resulted in a deadly shooting near the car wash.
