Former Iraan High School track and field state medalist Canon Andrews ended his throwing career at Angelo State University with top honors in the Rams’ region and as a national qualifier.

Andrews was one of 13 members of the Angelo State track and field team that earned NCAA Division II All-South Central Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for their performances during the 2022 outdoor season.

The senior earned the honors in the hammer toss – an event he placed first in three times and second in three times out of the eight meets he competed in the event during the 2022 outdoor season.

Andrews’ best toss of the season was 202 feet 5 inches – a mark that would have been good enough for sixth place at nationals.

The top five individuals in each event from each region earned all-region honors, along with each member of the top three relay teams.

Andrews qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the hammer toss and placed 16th with a throw of 175 feet 6 inches.

Andrews finished his career as a three-time national qualifier in the hammer toss and was a member of the Rams’ 2020 Indoor Track and Field Conference Championship team.

Additional Angelo State athletes that received all-region honors in 2022 included: two for Nicholas Ellisor of Coldspring (400 meters, 4x400 relay). Also being named all-region are Luis Alvarado of Laredo (javelin), Joshua Body of Abilene (triple jump), J. Cason Brown of Schulenburg (discus), Viktor Ertelt of San Angelo (javelin), Jacobee Jones of Rowlett (pole vault), Elvis Kryukov of Limassol, Cyprus, (decathlon), Kyle Lumpkins of Junction (decathlon), Bossman Pinkrah of Accra, Ghana, (4x400 relay), Romel Plummer of Kingston, Jamaica, (400-meter hurdles), Jonathan Ramirez of Andrews (4x400 relay) and Emmett Seals of Rowlett (4x400 relay).
