KNOX COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - When some students head back to school in August, they will need to leave one item at home.

Officials with the Knox County School System approved a no backpack policy for middle and high school students.

”Anything can be brought in on a backpack. Knox County Middle School, when they implemented this policy was at the same time that we started using the metal detector,” Frank Shelton, Knox County Schools Communications and Governance said.

As part of that policy, duffle, book and briefcase-style bags are also not allowed.

The school district is taking sports teams and clubs that may need to bring a travel bag for trips into consideration.

”Those students that must bring a bag to school, it might be luggage if they’re taking a trip, all that will be stored inside the school until the student needs it,” Shelton said. ”Small purses, small little bags, you know for those personal items will still be permitted.”

This policy will not apply to elementary school students.
