DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – Racers from across the country will be motoring into Detroit Lakes on Saturday.

The Hemmings Motor News Great Race is a time, speed and endurance rally for collector vehicles made before 1975 with most entries having been manufactured before World War II.

This year’s route began in Rhode Island on Saturday, June 18th and racers will travel through 10 different states until they finish in Fargo on Sunday. The vehicles, each with a driver and navigator, are given precise instructions each day that detail every move down to the second. They are scored at secret check points along the way and are penalized one second for each second either early or late.

“Each day is an average of about 250 miles,” said Jeff Stumb Race Director for the Great Race. “In an old car that’s quite a challenge. What you could do in your modern car in 3 or 4 hours it will take us ten hours to do.”

The winners will take home a $50,000 prize. Cars will begin rolling into People’s Park in Detroit Lakes starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
